NOTE: This is the full broadcast portion of the interview. It was continued in-studio with an additional 58-minute discussion which is available on our 86-minute DVD.
Ram Dass probes deeply into the nature of helping relationships. He suggests that when we see deeply into each human being, no matter how desperate the situation, we are able to honor and learn from them. If we view ourselves as the “helper,” we become trapped in the prison of our own self-image — and this interferes with genuine compassion.
Ram Dass’ own path has led him to look for God in every person and situation. Following this path, his life of service has included working with refugees, with the blind, and with the dying. In this moving, two-part program, he examines the delicate state of awareness in which one acts compassionately for social change while also accepting the world exactly as it is.
Ram Dass (a.k.a. Richard Alpert, Ph.D.) is a spiritual teacher and author of Be Here Now, The Only Dance There Is, The Psychedelic Experience (co-authored with Ralph Metzner , Grist for the Mill (co-authored with Stephen Levine, Journey of Awakening, Miracle of Love and How Can I Help.

A drunken one does not like big words but he does like mental peace!
serving humanity is a term that can just as easily be interpreted as benevolent, as it can be deemed as malevolent. More so in the field of social activism and aid work
RIP, your words are forever, thank you for being my mentor when i was younger!-WAZROM! wazrom.webs.com
We are "all one", but does not existence contain all of existence, in that sense. Which would allow a legitimate place for both love and hate, good and evil etc etc…..
LOVE this
This video has 80,934 views – At the moment the most viewed video on Youtube is Psy with "Gangnam Style" at 2,102,295,018 – We need more of Ram Dass… much more. But you have to laugh at where we have arrived.
Awesome.
Thanks for your wisdom.
Exquisite. On service, 14.15 to 15.30. Wow. Service. Service for the sake of service. Not for a purpose or gratification. Powerful. :-)
Beyond the intellect and into the sublime. Ram Dass is relaxed, trusting and deeply in the moment, his answers are deep but seem very authentic to me. Jeffrey Mishlove does a great job too in pushing the boundaries of someone who is off the page, both intellectually and spiritually.
Benevolent Tyrant- Leto II from the Dune series?
11:43 We are never separate :)
'Do what you do with another human being but never put them out of your heart' Love that :)
Yes, it's really a paradox. I went through a period of very great danger to my life, back in the 1990s, and I managed the situation in making myself a total servant to the universe, and other people around me. I abandoned all fight, while I was treated by some people very unjustly, I did not complain.
Instead, I was studying both Christian and Buddhist writings and learnt that the personal ego is not in control of our real good life. When we practice wu wei, nonaction, for a certain time, there are connections with people to come about, and suddenly we feel we can help others who are much worse off than ourselves. And then, not resisting, but doing the work that the universe wants us to do, in helping others around us, a new energy comes up, and a silent transformation takes place that is really miraculous.
I believe the universe is benevolent … yes. I experienced it many times.
Ram sharing wisdom, cool.
I might be weird and everything but I see this world where there no longer is hate. A world ruled by love. I mean I want to change the world and make t see that love is amazing but how I hope this book brings the answer without having to do LSD.. I hope reading this book opens my mind alot more

'When you make yourself zero your power becomes invincible'… Mahatma Ghandi.
Awesome. I'm thinking about starting my own religion, or organization, or something, to propel consciousness towards re-awakening…
That way the people in control will start to remember who they are, and the connection between all things shall manifest into a new reality…where anything is possible.
i'm with you
Just discovered Ram Dass Wow Better late than never
and That's where meditation really comes into play.
He is helping me on my path so much right now…
Jeffrey made mention of it being almost the '90s. I got a kick out of the fact that when they were discussing technological advancements there was no mention of the internet. It wasn't even a big deal yet!
Jerry Brown? That guy is a puppet for the control– my guard is up.
7:25 Jerry Brown must of time travel lol back to the future
