If anyone has a right to feel deeply resentful, it’s His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As you may already know, the spiritual leader of Tibet was forced to flee his home country when he was just 14 years old, and he’s spent decades watching his people suffer persecution and abuse.

And yet, his message to the world is all about love, compassion and kindness.I dreamt of being able to sit with him and ask one single question…I wanted to know, after all that he and his people had endured for decades, how there seemed to be no anger, resentment or bitterness in him?

Then one day in Dharamsala, India, I had the opportunity to ask him this question, and his answer caused me to completely change how I saw some of the more challenging relationships in my own life.

Enrique Santorio says:

As Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (a buddhist monk) said, "In themselves external conditions are neither good nor bad". In fact, it is our attitude which defines them. Hence, instead of relying on anger, hate and aversion to cope with uncomfortable or even disgusting situations, a positive mentality based on loving kindness (called "metta" in Pali) will ultimately bring us joy and peace in our lives.

Celeste Hackett says:

YES. Good job. This is what I teach my clients.
