Centrepiece Hawkins 1964

Date: October 2, 1964
Location: Wembley Town Hall, London
ldr- Hawkins; t- Harry Edison; ts- Hawkins, Sir Charles Thompson; b- Jimmy Woode; d- Jo Jones
The group had played into the morning of October 2 at the concert in Paris, and then recorded this session later in the same day.

Harry Sweets Edison!
I had not heard or seen this clip for a few years and in the preparation of this clip I paid special attention to Sweets Edison.
Hawkins is such a genius that it appears that the other players are just there to make it happen for Coleman.
However when Edison’s trumpet solo started I was fascinated by his controlled simplicity and then building to this immense outburst of sound. Again, this is another simple 12 bar blues, this time in Ab, and the way Edison glides to the high Eb is just incredible.
Stylewise I always put Roy Eldridge first in this kind of approach, but dear folks, we should not under-estimate Harry Sweets!
Wow, Wow, Wow!
