In reality, problems cannot exist without a perceiver, as circumstances aren’t troublesome without someone or something identifying them as such. So, if there’s nothing inherently problematic about reality, doesn’t that mean that we humans repeatedly (and on a grand scale) worry about problems that don’t even exist?

Atkay says:

I think we create our problems, because we are made to solve them. We love to solve them, or at least to get them solved. Problems add purpose to our lives.

Dowlphwin says:

Early fallacy. If a problem is subjective, then it is subjectively relevant, so it is not inherent that we worry about problems that don't exist. Whether that is the case relies on interpretation and truth adherence. A problem can actually exist, within its parameters.
8:10 That is not a difference in perception but in situation. Both investors, if situations swapped, would probably perceive things similarly.
8:34 I don't think that solving a problem often leads to another problem. There might be a confusion of problem solution with symptom management and distracts us from actual healing.
This is how stoicism can be twisted into an evasive escapism, because one can acknowledge the concept of a problem, embrace it, solve problems, without worrying about unpleasant experiences. Embracing the experience fully – is that still stoicism? Or does stoicism reject the notion of a problem?
12:10 When we solve a problem, we change our circumstances in our favor? … Not maybe in some cases in other people's favor? 🤔 – Empathy motivation seems pushed away in this essay.
My thesis is that fear begets fear and love begets love, so when you perceive a problem out of love and solve it with love, then that is an overall beneficial and desirable accomplishment. – But I also suspect that the more such 'radical' approaches are taken, the more worried the false stoics are gonna get and perceive it as a problem to be solved by preaching more stoicism. 😉 So in that sense love also has a fear-exposing benefit. Love and truth are very closely related, if not essentially the same.

Here is my own little pretentious spiritual tale to ponder, kōan-style:
Someone threatens to murder a man's family. Another man tells him: That is not a problem. See, it is only you who worries about it, but to me, it is no concern. I don't even have a family. So you are creating a problem where there is none.
We cut to the hitman tasked with murdering the family. His partner tells him that he's got a problem, because due to his spelled out threats the police is on his trail, and if he finishes the job, he might get caught later. The hitman responds that there are no problems, only situations, and that he will deal with the police when it becomes relevant.

Another one:
A daoist meets a buddhist in meditation and asks him what he is doing. The buddhist says: "I am devoting to meditation in order to shed all worldly attachments and achieve nirvana." The daoist replies: "Why the hurry?"

Nunnles says:

Saying that problems "don't even exist" is like saying colors don't even exist. Sure, it's true in a way. But not a way that is meaningful to a person. Humans see colors. Humans identify problems. Humans suffer.

Nunnles says:

Ok, sure. Suffering cannot exist without a sufferer. But humans are sufferers. So . . .

Max E. Maxxy says:

Certainly useful, but I can only wish my problems were in my head, facing eviction and a senile bedridden mother and her health issues. Nonetheless, worrying doesnt make anything feel better at all, and I try to face each day head on. I will say however, worrying- or at least in the sense of it making me DO more -earlier on with some things may have actually HELPED my situation today (saving more money , for example)

tom says:

ask yourself when you leave your dog locked in a crate; How would I react if locked in a box for an indefinite period of time with only limited food and water. When you realize your dog is a slave and you are a slave keeper make a decision, is it better to be a master or a slave. You could, optionally, open the front door, remove the collar and identification and let the dog run. Then ask yourself, is this really a problem?

tom says:

im worried about worrying.

Kittyququmber says:

His example of dogs is not true.

Falak Gilani says:

Tell that to someone with real problems that are not very "subjective" and more severe than what a party analogy can demonstrate. Plus, mostly in real life, "levels of stress" and "worry" aren't the only things keeping you awake and requiring attention, nor does our "attitude" help with squat.

Not to play devil's advocate, but those that suffer from severe mental illnesses are definitely suffering even when they try to act like they're not.
