“Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.”

“A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

These wise phrases, which you’ve no doubt heard before are over 2000 years old. They come from Laozi’s Daodejing. What many consider to be the founding document of Daoism. This organised religious tradition is known for it’s care for nature, peace, and going with the flow.

But what exactly is Daoism? What do Yin, Yang, and Qi mean, and what does it have to do with Obi-Wan Kenobi? Well Let’s Find Out.

I’d like to thank the Associated Press for providing me with footage for this video http://www.aparchive.com/

There are many many versions of this you can read. Lots of people enjoy the Stephen Mitchell translation. It is written for Westerners to enjoy rather than an actual translation. Ursula LeGuin’s version is also quite good. But I like Addiss’s version. You can read it free here https://terebess.hu/english/tao/addiss.html

@DrinkingStar says:

For many years without no knowing it, much if not most what I believe is Daoism. I have evolved into becoming somewhat of a Daoist over time by going to the beach nearly every day and letting my mind wander. I forget who said ," if you spend a day doing nothing, you have learned how to live". Was that a quote by Lao Tzu? Recently, I stumbled into learning that I was a sort of Daoist by looking for something I call "Thoughts for keeping" . In my search, I discovered some of the writings of Lao Tzu. In reading some of Lao's teachings, I became aware that my view of life and nature were the same. Trying to explain Dao is like trying to explain snow or ice to someone who has only lived in a desert. They might know about(experienced) liquid water(rain) but they could never comprehend solid water(snow or ice) because they never experienced it. How can we comprehend infinity when we live in a finite world of existence? It is also hard to accept the concept of infinity when slicing something in half each time we slice it going from point A to point B. As such, how could anyone really totally understand the Dao?

A better example of Wu Wei as Japanese Judo would've actually been Wushu martial arts.

@annieevie9607 says:

GUYS IM BEGGING YOU. If you ever see the letter "j" in a mandarin chinese word, pronounce it the same as english! it's pronounced just like an english j, not this weird other sound that people seem to make. Beijing, for example, is literally pronounced bay-jing. jing as in jingle bells. the exact same way. Sorry I know this is not a big deal but it grinds my gears so hard that english speakers take a sound in mandarin which is pronounced EXACTLY THE SAME as it would be in English and just change it for no reason other than "its a foreign language so must be different". no hate to anyone but please if you read this comment just adjust your pronunciation it will make me so happy. remember. chinese jing = jing as in jingle bells. just like english. thank you.

I think you did a great job breaking Taoism down in 20 minutes. Kudos.

@zulkifliawang5746 says:

What is confusionism

@Adam_Himself says:

The video references Daoism with follow up texts that are developed outside of philosophical Daoism and into the realm of religious (Hsien) Daoism.

None of those texts are considered important for Daoism as a philosophy. All core tenants can be found in the Daodejing and Zhuangzi. Everything else is take-it-or-leave-it.

Just so people don't get confused by the lack of nuance in this videos explanatory transition.
