If you had the chance to interview the Dalai Lama, what would you say to him?

Perhaps you would ask him the secret to happiness or the meaning of life, or even talk about world peace.

One Australian anchor clearly didn’t think any of these topics were worthy enough of the spiritual leader, so instead decided to tell him a joke – and a very bad joke at that.

Karl Stefanovic from the country’s Today show, though it fitting to tell the Tibetan leader a joke about himself when he interviewed him during a trip down under.
He said: ‘So the Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop.’
An interpreter can then be heard off camera repeating this to His Holiness – who looks very confused but tries to remain polite and keep up with the joke asking, ‘Pizza? Ah pizza.’
At this stage, Mr Stefanovic, thinking he gets it, then continues: ‘And he says, “Can you make me one with everything?”‘
As the Dalai Lama looks blankly at him – trying his best to understand what the morning show anchor is telling him – Mr Stefanovic repeats the punchline using hand gestures only to be met with more blank stares.

It was only then after a long and uncomfortable silence that Mr Stefanovic starts hysterically laughing and put his heads in his hands and says: ‘Oh, I knew it wouldn’t work.’
He later tweeted: ‘OK worst gag of the year with best guest short list. Even I am cringing.’
