My intention with this video is NOT TO SHAME anyone who is involved in the New Age Spirituality movement, practices LoA, positive thinning, or adopts beliefs..etc!
New Age Spirituality has benefited my life in many ways, and i feel like the benefits get talked about (and fabricated!š¤£) constantly. i think it’s necessary we discuss some of the shadow sides to the movement.
My intention is to help spread awareness on some of these problematic beliefs, rhetorics and practices within the movement. I hope to help introduce a more inclusive and and collective approach to spirituality, healing and even the yoga community. (more to come on this subject!)
Edit: I was recently educated on how the word ‘narcissist’ is ableist when using it to describe toxic and abusive behaviors. I will doing my part in removing this word from my vocabulary and would like to apologize wholeheartedly to anyone I offended with my irresponsible use of the word. Hi dear, thank you so much for sharing this. I am so aware of the toxic new age movement and how it is neo colonial in so many ways, its so individualistic and privileged. I live in Ubud where I am surrounded by new age spiritual people, white privilege and neo colonialism. Sometimes I feel so lost and I feel that there is something wrong with me for not feeling connected to this movement.

Jesus is the way the truth and the life
I've been into spirituality for a while now and recently tried to "practice" it more. Honestly I'm aware that manifestation isn't really a thing and as you said it's pseudoscience but for me it helps to just feel in control of some stuff in my life, to give yourself more motivation. If it actually worked like many people are saying then there wouldn't be racism and other horrible stuff. To me it's about being more self aware, being mindful and trying to better myself but it can be harmful like all the examples you mentioned. Something that also bothers me is that when someone displays obvious sings of mental illness, people will be like "no you're just a starseed" like…WHAT?

I absolutely LOVE this video. The whole time listening I kept nodding because these are all thoughts Iāve been having for so long about a lot of these spiritual rhetorics. I see āspiritual life coachesā everywhere on Instagram and itās just sooooo self serving while preaching helping others āwake upā. Like ummmm, I am awake and am living in reality thank you. Not to mention so many of these practices were stolen from East Asian countries and indigenous people.
This is a great take on the packaging and massive consumption of new age spirituality.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have been looking for a video that isnāt talking about how Jesus is right and new age is wrong. I just want some real information. I feel like most people move from new age to Jesus are just trying to fill that void after all their hope and life purpose was crushed by deciding what they believe isnāt all true. Itās something that not many people are able to cope with. Not knowing. Potentially never truly knowing what we are all here for or why. I recently came out of this beliefs of the new age spirituality and I truly feel like Iām coming out of a cult and realizing how blind I was calling it āawarenessā actually being aware of nothing but myself and how the universe revolves around me. As a white personal I feel like this mentality only perpetuates white privilege and even encourages supremacy because god is divinely guiding you towards your dream life but what about those people starving in Africa that also believe in god to cope with their unfortunate conditions that they have no control over. Do they not get that divine guidance from source or god? Why are they less worthy? Because they donāt acknowledge the ālaw of attractionā that was preached by white people in a first world country where they have no access to that information? Itās such a dangerous way of thinking that can evolve into more dangerous ways of thinking and acting. Acknowledging our privileges is a way to connect. Connecting with others by disregarding others experiences is counterintuitive. Again thank you so much for this video I could talk about this forever. Iām so happy we found our way out of these beliefs even though it is hard to realize how problematic we were for so long.

As someone in trauma therapy and who struggles with dissociation and lack of self-identity due to BPD and my lizard brainā¦ as someone who has OCD with existential themesā¦ ego death is very triggering and, if I strived for it, would prevent me from true healing (ie. living a functional life as a human). I have seen many mediums and, for me, they have helped me help myself with grief (but therapists or careful research/thought could do the same)ā¦ however, Iāve been directed to take different medications than my psychiatrist, GP, and clinical psychologists would ever recommend. Iāve been encouraged to try supplements that have been scientifically proven to cause more harm than good to our bodies. Mediums should have government regulations, honestly.
Although I do not experience delusions or hallucinations, myself, many mediums would consider them to be spiritual and would not direct people to proper treatmentā¦ this is so so dangerous! I would love to watch a video on that topic, if you havenāt created one already. Thank you for this validating video. ā¤ļø

I agree with so much in this video, and I hope you read my comment with an open mind.
Can we stop using the word āNarcissistā as a synonym for manipulative, self centered or abusive? Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a personality disorder that many people struggle with. They are not abusive people. Theyāre people like you and me, except they hide their shame and self hate behind a veil of being āself absorbedā and putting themselves higher than everyone else. Itās like that one lyric from Marina and the Diamond that goes āI feel like Iām the worst, so I always act like Iām the bestā. Narcissists often look for constant praise and approval because theyāre hurting inside. They often have mood swings when they fail to reach perfection. Theyāre hurting. Donāt compare people struggling with NPD to awful people. Horrible people are horrible people, thatās it. Calling bad people āNarcissisticā only
1. Spreads stigma against NPD, making it harder for those who are struggling to get help.
2. Puts responsibility on a mental disorder rather than the person committing the crime.
Donāt use āNarcissisticā as a synonym for abusive, manipulative, or killer. People with NPD are some of the greatest people you will ever meet. I think they deserve our respect, if anything. Our society has been misusing this medical label far enough. Narcissists arenāt who you think they are.
Iām not saying that there arenāt people with NPD who abuse. Or that these behaviors arenāt things that a lot of (clinical) narcissists do. But you people really need to do research. NPD is a very rare mental disorder. But emotional abuse is a very common occurrence. Knowing one person with NPD doesnāt automatically make you a doctor. And associating abuse with NPD only stigmatizes people with NPD who went through childhood trauma who deserve nothing but our respect.
In fact, in a way itās kind of comical when we address abuse victims, but then label all perpetrators as ānarcissistsā. Many victims of trauma (specifically in childhood) ARE the narcissist in the situation, and thereās nothing wrong with that. The trauma survivors are the ānarcsā in question. People with NPD are victims. Of course, until they become a perpetrator, but that rule applies to anybody and everybody.
Again, Iām not saying that there arenāt people with NPD who abuse. But just like how there are abusive people with NPD, there are abusive people with BPD, CPTSD, major depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and, no mental disorder at all. Neurotypicals abuse too. Narcissism isnāt abuse. There is no such thing as āNarcissistic Abuseā, thatās just pop psychology. āClassic narcissismā is what you read in scholarly articles and the DSM.
Lastly, My father is very abusive and heās (almost) neurotypical. (He has one substance use disorder though.) NPD doesnāt equal abuse. No mental disorder does. Every single person with NPD is different. There are over 100 combinations of the symptoms you can have to be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. People with NPD arenāt all the same, let alone abusive like my father.
