I think you misunderstood Back to the Future. The film-makers did not mean for the viewer to empathise with the bully's gang. Most people empathise with Marty and George who are being bullied and want them to stand up for themselves. You are meant to feel elated when Marty outwits them and recognise that George's more direct approach is not ideal, but better than nothing.
