Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual teacher and author, born in Germany and educated at the Universities of London and Cambridge. At the age of 29 a profound inner transformation radically changed the course of his life. He devoted the next several years to understanding, integrating, and deepening that transformation. With his international bestsellers, The Power of Now and A New Earth—translated into over 52 languages—he has introduced millions to the joy and freedom of living life in the present moment. The New York Times has described him as “the most popular spiritual author in the United States”, and Watkins Review has named him “the most spiritually influential person in the world.”

Eckhart’s profound, yet simple teachings have helped countless people around the globe experience a state of vibrantly alive inner peace in their daily lives. His teachings focus on awakening consciousness, which transcends ego and discursive thinking, and can be seen as the next step in human evolution. In the awakened state of presence, we discover what Eckhart describes as our essential identity—who we are beneath the surface—and its power for transforming our selves and our world.

Oddly enough, many years ago I had some contact with the teachings of Socrates. And that's what I felt then: Socrates had to be a spiritual master. Nice to hear it from a contemporary spiritual master! Thank you Master!

Daniel - stop surviving START LIVING / Just relax says:

You have to stop the habit of being sensitive to the feeling of 'anxiety' itself. Before, when even the smallest levels of anxiety emerged, you may have instantly started to worry and overthink. That was your defense mechanism against anxiety.

However, that is the wrong way to react. Even when anxiety emerges, people who are not so sensitive are not really affected. They don’t fear more than they need to. Naturally, they don’t ‘defend’ themselves by overthinking. In other words, they are not susceptible to the vicious loop of overthinking.

So when you feel insecure, you can become stronger if you can release the compulsion of getting rid of your anxiety. Re-define what it means to be mentally strong.

You are strong not ‘because’ of something, but you are strong ‘despite’ of something.

I love Socrates…and Plato, too. Eckhart is great but I don't think he's being fair in contrasting them dualistically. I believe Plato's 7th letter is genuine where he says that the greatest matters he can't express. Socrates's "daimon" (inner voice) is mentioned sympathetically in Plato's versions of the dialogues and also a scene about Socrates staying still and meditating for a long time. And then there's Plato's Socrates switching into conveying myths where the arguments are failing. Eckhart once spoke of how he himself is not so much speaking to convey information, but it is hoped the listener will attend meditatively. I believe that possibly excepting the later dialogues, Plato's version of Socrates also is not really about convincing the hearer about some specific answer or theory….it's about realizing how little we know—conceptually—about some of the most important matters.
