The Tao Te Ching (pronounced Dao De Jing) was a book of wisdom written for kings by a sage named Lao-Tzu, circa 500BC China. Much like the book of Proverbs found in the Biblical canon, the truths found in the Tao Te Ching are universal and timeless. But it’s not just the east which was, and still is influenced by this great work. The Tao Te Ching resonates deeply with many of the Christian mystics as well, from antiquity to modern times. The Tao is not a religion. Its literal translation is The Way. A way of seeing, a way of being. In the Chinese translation of the New Testament, when Christ refers to “The Way,” their word for it is The Tao. “Ritual and religion is the husk of true faith.” These are one of the proverbs found in the book. So regardless of your religious background, or whether you believe in God or not, you will still find wonderful truths about life put into the simplest of words. Truths about leadership, patience, love and creativity. So share this link with those you love. It is a gift to the world, and we are lucky to be living in a time like this where such things can be shared. The world needs healing. The healing begins with the metanoia–the transformation of the mind.

You don’t need to start with the beginning. You can literally play this from any point in the video and still gain something. I have a special liking for the second half which covers leadership and governance.

I claim no rights to the content in this audio reading. This video is not being monetized. It is a gift to you. I put this together only because I found NO OTHER source on YouTube that has put this Wayne Dyer reading to Binaural Beats and nature sounds, and I felt like we really needed this version. Listen before bed. Listen in the morning. Listen when you just need to slow down and gather your thoughts before making an important decision. I must have listened to this at least 10 dozen times.

Graham O'Shaughnessy says:

I got my BA in philosophy with a focus on Chinese and North East Asian Philosophy and am continuing graduate school in the humanities with a similar focus. I provided some brief history of Taoism and five basic ideas of Taoism, if anyone is interested.

"The Tao Te Ching" (occasionally titled "The Laozi") means (The Classic of the Way of Power) according to legend it was composed by Lao Tzu/ Laozi ( he was born with the given name 'Li Tan' but earned the name Lao Tzu or Laozi literally meaning "Old Master") an older contemporary of Confucius (c.551 B.C.E- 479 B.C.E). It is said Laozi compiled the text at the request of a traveler who wanted to learn about the way. Laozi composed two books concerning virtue and the way before he vanished from history. Some say his wisdom allowed him to live to be at least 200.

However, contemporary scholarship believes the semi- historical Laozi to have existed centuries before the Tao Te Ching was composed. Laozi is the key Taoist thinker of the second phase of Taoist thought, he succeeded Yang Chu and precedes Chuang Tzu. (D.C. Lau provides an excellent translation of "The Tao Te Ching," "The Analects of Confucius" and "The Mencius". Fung- Yu Lan's "A Short History of Chinese Philosophy" in addition to Wing -Tsit Chan's "A Sourcbook in Chinese Philosophy" are amazing companions to further study and exploration!)

1.) The Tao (literally translates to "the way") is defined what it is not, just as red is defined by all that is not red. If it can be defined it is not the eternal Tao.

2.) The sage who is not attached to emotions is not cold rather from the perspective of the Tao sees them for what they are but does not let them control him.

3.) All being (yu) comes from non-being (wu) which is the Tao, to see things from the perspective of the Tao sees them from the perspective of the mother of all things. However this description fails to tell us anything about the Tao.

4.) Wu-Wei, doing for nothing and yet nothing is left undone. Taoism sees creating laws as a way to breed illegal activities. To do nothing the state manages to create a good society.

5.) All things are both constructive and destructive, a table is a construction that was born from the destruction of the tree.
